Coast, countryside, history and plenty of places to stop along the way. If you have three days to explore Sussex by the Sea, you do not have to choose between them.
Littlehampton, Arundel, the South Downs and Bognor Regis are close enough to combine into one short break, while each offers something completely different. Here is one way to experience all four.
Start beside the water in Littlehampton, where the River Arun meets the sea. Spend time on East or West Beach, walk along the harbour and riverside, or get out on the water with one of the town’s watersports experiences. Families can add Harbour Park, Mewsbrook Park, the miniature railway or West Green Park’s splash water feature to the day, with plenty of cafés, restaurants and independent places to discover when it is time to refuel.
Begin the day in Arundel, where historic streets, independent shops and places to eat sit beneath the unmistakable backdrop of Arundel Castle. Explore the town, wander beside the River Arun or make time for the area’s heritage and wildlife before heading into the countryside.
Then swap town for the South Downs. Follow a walking trail, discover a country pub, browse a farm shop or simply take in the rolling landscape. If you want to linger, the countryside is dotted with campsites, glamping stays, shepherd’s huts and rural hideaways that make it easy to slow the pace down.
Finish your trip back by the sea in Bognor Regis. Take a stroll along the promenade, spend time on the beach and discover the town’s seaside heritage, from its historic pier to Bognor Regis Museum. Hotham Park offers green space and family fun, while Butlin’s brings even more entertainment to the coast, whether you are visiting for the day or making it part of a longer break. Add local food, shops and year-round entertainment and there is plenty to fill your final day.
Three days will give you a taste of Sussex by the Sea, but there is always more to discover. Stay beside the coast, choose a countryside escape or split your break between the two. With Littlehampton, Arundel, the South Downs and Bognor Regis all within easy reach of one another, staying longer simply gives you more time to explore at your own pace.
Explore Sussex by the Sea to find places to stay, things to do, food and drink, and more inspiration for planning your West Sussex break.
