Sometimes the best weekends are the ones that leave a little room to breathe. The South Downs offers rolling countryside, walking trails, welcoming pubs, local produce and characterful places to stay, all within easy reach of the Sussex coast.

Rather than trying to tick off a long list, slow the pace down and make the landscape part of the experience.

Walk, wander and see where the trail takes you

The South Downs is made for exploring on foot. Choose a longer route or simply set out for a countryside wander, taking in rolling hills, woodland, villages and far-reaching views along the way. You do not need to cover huge distances to feel as though you have escaped the everyday.

Make the pub part of the plan

A countryside walk is even better when there is a cosy pub waiting somewhere along the route. Stop for lunch, settle in for a local drink or make an evening of it. The villages and countryside around the South Downs are dotted with welcoming places that make slowing down very easy.

Discover farm shops and local flavours

Leave space in the weekend for a farm shop, local producer or countryside café. Picking up something grown, made or produced nearby is an easy way to experience another side of the South Downs, and gives you a good excuse to take the scenic route.

Stay somewhere with a little character

This is countryside made for staying over. Campsites and glamping retreats sit alongside shepherd’s huts and rural hideaways, giving you plenty of ways to wake up closer to the landscape. Choose somewhere simple or make the accommodation part of the adventure.

Look up after dark

When daylight fades, the experience does not have to end. The South Downs is known for its dark skies, making clear evenings ideal for stargazing. Wrap up warm, step outside and enjoy a completely different view of the countryside.

Turn a weekend into a coast and countryside break

One of the best things about exploring this part of West Sussex is how easily the landscape changes. Spend time in the South Downs, then head towards Arundel, Littlehampton or Bognor Regis for history, beaches and seaside experiences. A weekend gives you a taste, but staying a little longer lets you enjoy both sides of Sussex by the Sea.
