Arun’s award-winning beaches

Visitors can also have peace of mind that the water quality at both Bognor Regis and Littlehampton are consistently rated either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Weekly tests are conducted at local beaches in the summer months to test water samples, and latest results can be found on the Arun District Council website.

Whatever the weather or season, you'll find family friendly fun on and around the sand and shingle beaches of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.

There are plenty of activities within a pebble’s throw of the beach, with seaside parks and greens, organised events in peak seasons, great food and drink options as well as town centres and transport links within walking distance.

Off the beaten track

For a quieter beach experience, try West Beach and Clymping, near Littlehampton, or Felpham, Aldwick and Pagham, near Bognor Regis - all of which offer unique relaxing scenery and stunning views of the sea amongst surrounding nature and wildlife.

As well as Bognor Regis & Littlehampton beaches, the Arun District also includes the historic town of Arundel and it’s tidal river that runs through the town, on its way to to Littlehampton Harbour.

The river offers a home to a plethora of wildlife and a playground for keen kayakers. Steeped in history and providing a stunning focal point to the town, visitors should be aware of the strong currents and deep water which make it one of the fastest flowing rivers in the UK .

Arundel to Amberley Route. This gentle ride takes you from the historic town of Arundel, with its iconic castle and beautiful riverside, through the picturesque countryside to Amberley. Or if you fancy a 19km walk or a 7 mile cycle following quiet country lanes, making it perfect for a peaceful commute or a weekend ride.

For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, the South Downs Way offers a fantastic off-road adventure.

There's something undeniably comforting about a plate of fish and chips; golden, crispy, and served with a side of nostalgia, this classic dish has a special place in many hearts.

Every year, on the first Friday of June, the United Kingdom cel ebrates National Fish and Chips Day, a day dedicated to honouring this beloved meal; although this year it lands on Thursday 6th June to coincide with the D-Day Celebrations.

Arundel Festival of the Arts

According to the Duke of Norfolk, the annual Arundel Festival “showcases everything that is excellent about our town”.

In its 46th year, the 10-day annual Arundel Festival of the Arts is back and better than ever for 2024! Join in from 16th to 26th of August for a joyful and uplifting celebration of music, art, theatre, culture, food, and drink in the historic West Sussex town.

Have a hoot on The Big Hoot Trail in Chichester & Arundel - VisitArundel.co.uk

From 10 July to 1 September , 30 owl sculptures will be swooping into public green spaces, Chichester high street and harbour and Arundel’s historic town centre, providing a fun and free day out for all the family during the summer holidays. Each owl sculpture is uniquely designed by a different artist and each has a story to tell.

The giant sponsored Owls will be raising funds for Chestnut Tree House and feature the work of local artist Ben Cavanagh

Littlehampton

Watch this space!

Littlehampton was recently awarded over £7m in government funding to enhance the Littlehampton seafront green. Improvements include new toilets, beach showers, car park renovations (including EV charging points), walkways and sustainable coastal planting and more social spaces for activities such as water play, as well as new food concessions.

Bognor Regis

For nature lovers, there are plenty of events at Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve and the breathtaking illuminated walking parade returns again this year on 25th August.

GTR announce new Southern timetable change

Coastal connections are getting better, faster and smoother!

GTR have made a number of improvements to rail services in the stations in and surrounding the Arun District. Improvement include:

Trains will now stop at Amberley and Christ’s Hospital half-hourly all day
More trains will run through to Portsmouth Harbour for improved access to Gunwharf and Isle of Wight ferries
There will be double the number of trains per hour from Chichester to Worthing/Brighton
Restoration of direct off-peak trains between Littlehampton and Brighton
Faster journeys between Brighton, Hove, Worthing and Southampton every 30 mins
Clockface timetables at key stations meaning trains spread more evenly throughout the hour
Direct trains from Warblington, Nutbourne, Bosham and Fishbourne to London all day Monday – Saturday.

So if you’re planning a trip, don’t forget to consider the train to take the hassle out of your journey... Lets Go Net Zero!

Bognor Regis

Take a gentle stroll along the promenade, visit the famous Bognor Regis Time Portal free to use, immersive experience , dive into a world of buzzing games and excitement at the arcades, but the thrill doesn’t stop there, take a break and refuel from one of the many food vendors , tantalising your taste buds with treats that are as diverse as they are delicious, or simply, relax, unwind and bask in the breathtaking views that stretch before you whilst you enjoy the sea breeze.

Explore the picturesque Victorian green spaces of Hotham Park , with lush gardens, a boating lake, miniature railway, and plenty of space for picnics and leisurely walks, as well as the glorious Hotham Park cafe , offering a delicious bite to eat with indoor, and outdoor seating.

If you're travelling with family, consider a day at the award winning Butlin's , an iconic action packed family holiday resort offering entertainment, activities, and fun for all ages!

Littlehampton

If you're feeling adventurous, you could try your hand at water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing, or paddleboarding, which are popular along the East Beach coast.

Indulge in some traditional British seaside cuisine by trying fish and chips or sampling locally caught seafood at one of the town's restaurants or seafood shacks.

Visit Harbour Park , an amusement park located right on the seafront. Enjoy rides, games, and attractions for the whole family, including a mini-golf course and adventure playground.

Take a stroll around Littlehampton Harbour and watch the boats coming and going. You can also book a boat tour or fishing trip from the harbour if you're feeling adventurous.

Arundel

Visit some of Arundel's beautiful gardens and parks, such as the Arundel Castle Gardens with their ‘allium extravaganza’ or Swanbourne Lake, where you can relax, picnic, and admire the natural beauty.

Wicked Little Letters

“Based on an incredible true story unearthed from the 1920s, Wicked Little Letters sees the post-war seaside town of Littlehampton entangled in a dark and absurd scandal. This ferociously funny mystery follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) who lives with her elderly parents, and rowdy Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), an Irish single mother who migrated to the town after the war. She lives with her young daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir), and new love Bill (Malachi Kirby).

A growing friendship between the pair is cut short when Rose holds her own against Edith’s strict and disapproving father Edward (Timothy Spall) at his birthday party. It's never been more important to be mindful about the way in which we travel. It's not about doing all things perfectly all the time, but making the small changes, like switching the car journey to a cycle ride , or utilising local public transport systems.

Here are some more ways you can ‘go green’ and help to preserve our beautiful Sussex by the Sea for generations to come.

Make the most of public transport

Planning a day trip? Why not consider taking public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving, especially for short distances. This can reduce your carbon footprint and help to improve air quality of the towns and villages.

There are some brilliant bus routes across Arundel, Bognor Regis, and Littlehampton, including the brand new 500 route which links many of the villages between Chichester, St. Richard’s Hospital, Shopwhyke, Tangmere, Fontwell, Barnham, Yapton and Littlehampton.

You can also enjoy the beautiful scenic route of the 600 bus running from Elmer and Bognor Regis to Chichester Bus Station and onwards via the Service 60 to the South Downs National Park via some glorious Sussex countryside and quaint villages en route to Midhurst, perfect for a ‘slow travel’ type of day out! Embrace the changing seasons and enjoy some seasonal activities on a budget in the Arun District / ‘Sussex by the Sea’ this Winter!

If you’re looking for free, low cost or perhaps ‘added value’ days out, activities and events to enjoy in Arundel, Bognor Regis & Littlehampton - without stretching the purse strings, we have some suggestions for you to investigate.

Arundel

Arundel offers some great options to enjoy all year round, without spending too much.

Enjoy a sense of wellbeing, the crisp winter air and great outdoors with a scenic walk in beautiful surroundings.

Download a free map of Arundel or follow some suggested walking routes written by locals. Whether it’s a relaxed stroll around the historic town centre, or an energetic hill hike up into the South Downs, there’s plenty to choose from at the countryside and walks section of the Visit Arundel website and a bargain Festive Trail map in December too from the Museum , but make sure you spend some time inside the museum first.

Arundel has a number of outside spaces and parks for people of all ages to enjoy when the weather permits. Take a stroll along Mill Road from the town to Swanbourne Lake and on to the Arundel Wetlands Centre . Pack a flask and snacks or enjoy refreshments at both locations. Alternatively, The Black Rabbit riverside pub or The Waterside Café are good refreshment stops. Best to call ahead and check opening times and local weather conditions.

If you’d rather stay warm and toasty indoors, there are plenty of local hostelries to choose from in the town centre and surrounding villages. Everyone is feeling the pinch, so why not support the local hospitality businesses, while soaking up a warm welcome and the local West Sussex culture.

The historic Town Hall shows great value films and nearby Slindon Cinema has a historic and vintage films in their 1930’s village hall. Arundel Farmers Market in the town square continues throughout the winter months on the third Saturday of the month.

The BIG event at this time of year is the wonderful Arundel at Christmas , starting on Friday 2 ^nd December and continuing at weekends throughout December 2022, with lots of free entertainment.

Bognor Regis

There is plenty to see and do on a budget in Bognor Regis, throughout the year.

The beach promenade and pier are easily accessible to enjoy the sea views of the award winning East Beach. The seaside amusements provide colourful entertainment and who doesn’t like a bag of chips in the fresh sea air. There are parks and outside areas that are family and pet friendly and all the beaches from Felpham to Pagham are popular for kayaking and windsurfing activities as the weather permits. You can enjoy some amazing wildlife watching too a little further west along the coast at RSPB Pagham Harbour , a beautiful nature reserve bursting with over wintering birds and other creatures.

Discover the Bognor Regis Heritage Trails and have fun exploring facts along the prom, trees in Hotham Park and intriguing local history. Use your smartphone or pick up a trail leaflet or two at The Regis Centre or the local library (subject to availability)' Or why not join in, volunteer or just watch the participants in the weekly free Bognor Regis ParkRun ? Join the local running community in Hotham Park every Saturday for adults, and every Sunday for children. Hotham Park offers a great free venue for a family day out all year round, and from 6 ^th – 24 ^th December 2022 there’s a free illuminated “Alice in Winterland” Trail to follow through the park towards the Ice Rink by the Park, which is open until the 2 ^nd January 2023.

The Picturedrome, Bognor Regis – is an independent cinema with latest films and streamed performances at bargain prices and you can enjoy great value shows and entertainment throughout the year at the Regis Centre and Alexandra Theatre. Littlehampton

Littlehampton has two beautiful beaches and a stunning harbour and riverside to enjoy walking all year round - with great views!

West Beach is home to one of only 3 sand dune systems in West Sussex, on a clear day you can enjoy views of the Isle of Wight and take long (or shorter) strolls in the bracing air. Watch the marine traffic in and around the harbour and witness the changes in the weather. East Beach is an award-winning sand and pebble beach, is family friendly and worth a visit whatever the weather, and the promenade is also home to Britain’s longest bench! Harbour Park Amusements by the river also has the children’s play facilities open all year too and more restaurants and cafes can be found alongside the riverside and in the nearby town centre. Five ways to make the most of the coast

The Arun District of West Sussex is home to 15 miles of shingle and sand coastline with two ‘Seaside Award’ winning resort towns and some beautiful Sussex villages with quieter rural beaches. There are two very different harbours to enjoy too, the busy Littlehampton Harbour where the River Arun meets the sea and the quieter open coastline of the RSPB Pagham Harbour . Wherever you go, the coast is overlooked by the ever-present South Downs offering many walks, cycling and horse riding routes with plenty of opportunities to observe Sussex at its best - all year round.

Here are our top tips and helpful resources so you can make the most of the coast in ‘Sussex by the Sea’.

1. How to get here

Each of our towns have railway stations that connect to London (Victoria) and other towns along the South Coast and inland to Arundel and the South Downs. Bognor Regis and Littlehampton stations are just a short walk or bus / taxi ride to the main beaches.

If you are visiting the beaches of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton this summer by car, it’s a great idea to plan in advance. There are plenty of parking spaces with easy access to the seafront, in both resorts, although the weekends and Bank Holidays of course can be very busy. You can find all information, including parking charges and directions, on the Arun District Council website

The promenades in both resorts are designed for ‘shared use’ with access to wheelchair users, cyclists, and walkers to enjoy the fresh air, sea breezes and those big blue skies. There are many places to eat, attractions, seaside shops and bars to cater for all, including of course plenty of ice cream, seafood and fish & chip options, and the town and village centres are within easy walking distance of the beaches. Look out for freshly caught fish and seafood to buy and try out the local activity of ‘crabbing’ at Littlehampton.

2. Stay Safe

Most importantly, make sure you stay safe at the coast and on our rivers. We want you to go home with nothing but happy memories!

Please take time to see and follow advice from the experts when enjoying the water and don’t forget the sunscreen too!

3. Dog-friendly

If you’re planning a beach trip with your four-legged friend, it is helpful to understand the areas of the beach where they are welcome, however, most popular areas are restricted during the summer months, so that all visitors can enjoy the fresh air and open spaces.

Between 1 May and 30 September each year, you cannot take your dog onto these main areas of the beach:

Bognor Regis – from Bognor Regis Sailing Club ramp to Gloucester Road
Felpham – from Canning Road to Felpham Sailing Club
Littlehampton – from East Pier to Norfolk Road

Dogs should be kept on a lead when walking on the promenades alongside these areas.

4. Experience local wildlife

Some great places to visit for nature by the coast include: Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve Littlehampton's West Beach and inland WWT Arundel , RSPB Pulborough Brooks plus of course the ever present nearby South Downs National Park For some great hints and tips on observing the county’s nature take a look at Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Sussex Bay Kelp Project in our Living Seas .

Relax in the shade of the summer trees, witness the changing seasons and admire the plants and wildlife in one of the district's many Green Flag award winning parks most within walking distance of the beaches.

5. Stay local for longer

There are many quality places to stay in ‘Sussex by The Sea’ from camping, glamping, tourer and caravan sites, holiday villages to cosy B&Bs, boutique guest houses, coaching inns and top class hotels and spas, including at Butlin’s, Bognor Regis.

Dog-friendly activities in the Arun District

Share the delights of ‘Sussex by the Sea’ with your four-legged companions …

With miles of coast, countryside and some wonderful local parks, plus many ‘dog friendly’ attractions, places to stay, eat and drink, you’re spoilt for choice.

We’ve put together some suggestions that you might like to sniff out together, plus pointers to where you can find more information.

Visiting the coast?

Here’s some great safety messages that are worth reading, helpfully provided by the RNLI , and HM Coastguard to help you plan and fully enjoy your visits safely, all year round.

Arun District Council welcome dogs to the beaches in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton , but there are some summer restrictions to note and some helpful guidance and rules to remember . From Easter to September, stop and say hello to the friendly and knowledgeable Beach Patrol Officers when you see them too.

Choose Arundel

The historic town of Arundel has lots to offer its visitors, both human and canine, all year round.

We could give you lots of ideas here, but our friends at Visit Arundel have already done the leg work. Take advice from the knowledgeable locals and jump over to their dog friendly activities page

Choose Bognor Regis

The flat promenade from Aldwick in the west and Felpham to the east of the town offer great walking potential with a shingle and sand (at low tide) beach as a great location to enjoy the fresh air all year round. Dogs are welcome (on a lead in the busiest spots please) and as already mentioned, there are some local restrictions during the summer months. Choose Littlehampton

The long stretches of beaches and riverside walks of Littlehampton create a lovely adventure playground for canine companions with many dog-friendly cafes and eateries to stop for a break along the way. West Beach, Clymping and East Beach are dog-friendly but it is important to be aware of the strong tidal river that separates the West Beach Nature Reserve (please watch out for local wildlife and nesting birds) from the busier East Beach. Its best to avoid the river banks as the River Arun is one of the fastest rivers in the country, and the strong current is dangerous for both humans and dogs! Arundel Christmas lights Switch On – 1 ^st December

December 1 ^st 2023 will be a double celebration in the historic town of Arundel. Not only will the Christmas Tree lights be turned on, to launch the traditional Christmas Festival, but on the same occasion, the Mayor of Arundel will confer the Freedom of Arundel on Edward Fitzalan-Howard, the 18 ^th Duke of Norfolk, the hereditary Earl Marshal of England, whose responsibilities include organising major ceremonial state occasions.

“So many people wished to witness and participate in this very special event that there was not a room in the town large enough to accommodate them. So, we decided to hold it in the Town Centre, at the heart of the conservation area, where everyone who wished to could take part”, explains Cllr. Tony Hunt, Mayor of Arundel.

“The Freedom of Arundel is only conferred in rare and exceptional circumstances. Since 1945 this honour has only been conferred on 7 individuals and the Royal Sussex Regiment. It took account of the contribution that the Duke had made to national life through organising both the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth ll and the Coronation of King Charles lll. This has earned the Duke of Norfolk respect and gratitude across the country, and in doing so it has enhanced the reputation of Arundel. People in Arundel told me that they felt proud that “our Duke” had not only organised the Coronation but was centre stage throughout”, explains Cllr. Tony Hunt.

Conferring the Freedom of Arundel also marks the contribution that the Duke has made to life in Arundel, and the exemplary effort which he has made to maintain sustainability and biodiversity on the Norfolk Estate, including his project to extend curlew from their northern stronghold on the Yorkshire Moors to the Peppering Estate in West Sussex.

Things to do on a budget

Make the most of the summer holidays and enjoy some fantastic family-friendly activities on a budget across the Arun District of Sussex by the Sea this season.

We understand the cost of living may pose some challenges to your itinerary this summer, particularly during the six-week break, which is why we have put together a list of some fantastic free, low cost and ‘added value’ activities and events available to enjoy across Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Bognor Regis

If you’re planning a day by the coast then you won’t want to miss out on experiencing the Beach on the Beach - a huge sandpit located on the East Beach promenade offering children a safe place to play even if the tide is high, and right next door there’s a free play park where the youngsters can soak up the fresh sea air too.

If we’re fortunate enough to enjoy the Great British sunshine, or even when there are clouds on the horizon, the Splash Fountains at Place St Maur, next to the Regis Centre and between the seafront and the High Street are a fantastic way of cooling off, with plenty of independent shops and eateries nearby. Or, why not treat yourself to a proper locally made ice cream while you watch others having fun –Sweet Flamingo Ice cream overlooks the fountains and Pinks Vintage Ice Cream Parlour is just few steps west along the prom.

Discover more about Bognor Regis and download or follow the Heritage Trail of your choice, ride the Promenade Train or visit Hotham Park for some great nature walks, cycle rides, Adventure Golf and shade from that sun when you need it. Take a more active journey along the promenade and use the activity equipment provided for free use and check out the town’s fabulous outdoor activities too!

Volunteer or cheer on the participants in the weekly free Bognor Regis ParkRun or even better, join the local running community in Hotham Park, every Saturday for adults and every Sunday for children.

Arundel

Steeped in history, Arundel is the destination this summer if you love quaint and cobbled!

Visit the Museum in Mill Road right opposite the castle entrance, to discover the rich history of Arundel and enjoy a great range of events at a very reasonable cost. Before heading into town, download the free i-spy trail from the website and meet the people of Arundel

Count how many footsteps it takes and how many different independent shops there are as you climb the High Street from the Market Cross; into Tarrant Street, Maltravers Street and up to the historic St Nicholas’ Church and Cathedral .

Look out for organised events at Visit Arundel – many of which might suit your budget or could even be free! Don’t forget to check the details of the annual Arundel Festival of the Arts for ten days of amazing entertainment at the end of August each year.

Enjoy feeding more wildfowl at Swanbourne Lake, hire a rowing boat, and climb the hills into the South Downs National Park .

Carry on along Mill Road to and on to the Arundel Wetlands Centre where you could spend the whole day for a great value visit. Consider purchasing a membership package for unlimited free visits to this wonderful nature reserve and all the WWT sites across the country!

Littlehampton

Another stunning seaside location, Littlehampton offers an abundance of activities for families.

Take a pedalo ride on Mewsbrook Park Lake , or a miniature railway ride between the park and Norfolk Gardens . Or ride the Promenade train from east to west and take in the seaside views.

Play a round of ‘piratical’ adventure golf, Putting or Par 3 golf at Norfolk Gardens , all with great sea views. Or try your hand at ‘crabbing’ on the riverside, or sailing your small toy boats on the ‘Oyster Pond’ by Harbour Park which has some great savings on their summer fun rides and activities.

Pack a picnic for the beach or the Seafront Greens , or use the free BBQ sites for your portable barbecue packs Visit the play parks and nature reserves of the district, or seek out the town centre and riverside monolith signs and maps to discover Littlehampton’s history and heritage and meet Ozzie the Owl on Littlehampton’s Heritage Trail

If you’re visiting the coast, check out all the info you need and the latest tides and weather and be creative with building stone sculptures at high tide and sandcastles at low tide then post your pics on social media.

As the long hot summer of 2023 continues, the Arun District of West Sussex – known to visitors as ‘Sussex by the Sea’, provides countless ways to relax and enjoy those long lazy days and warm evenings.

July - Arundel Cathedral is celebrating its 150 ^th Anniversary and Arundel Museum is celebrating its 10 ^th anniversary, with a great exhibition about the Cathedral! The Arundel Arts Festival has started its pre festival events (the main event is in late August) and Arundel Castle offers a spectacular day out – for the castle, events and the gardens too.

August - The biggest event is Arundel Arts Festival from 18 ^th – 28 ^th August with far too much planned to tell you here. Click on the website, sign up for the newsletter or follow their social media for news of the amazing programme of events.

The annual County Day of Sussex is the 16 ^th June, the feast day of St Richard , one of two Bishop Saints of the county. Why not consider a mindful pilgrimage to Chichester cathedral by foot, bike and even online!

Fly the Sussex Flag, sing the song and discover the origins of "Sussex by the Sea"

The Sussex flag is blue (to echo the sea) and yellow 'martlets' (mythical birds of ancient heraldry) to reflect the colour of sunshine. Search online for ‘Sussex Flag’ to purchase your flag and bunting from various sources and see how many you can spot proudly flying at locations across the county this June.

Written by William Ward-Higgs in South Bersted, Bognor Regis , the county's historic anthem "Good Old Sussex by the Sea" is played at many events and official occasions throughout both East and West Sussex and even adopted by Brighton and Hove Football Club.

When life gets busy, it’s often the case that we forget the beauty around us. The changing seasons, budding trees, melodic songbirds, infinite shades of green, longer evenings, lighter mornings and a change of pressure and warmth in the air, all do their best to entice us outside.

For many of us, life’s challenges and the pace of everyday life can get in the way of enjoying what is on our doorstep. However, being aware and present in our surroundings, to feel a moment of calm or escape from the daily routines or chores and appreciate the low cost, high value benefits of our beautiful Arun District can work wonders. From stunning vistas to fresh air, incredible wildlife and nature at its best. All are free to enjoy if you have the chance.

We have now passed the spring equinox, and as the clocks ‘spring forward’ on the 25 ^th of March and we are officially in British Summer Time, the growing number of daylight hours will encourage lots of outdoor activities and visits to our fabulous range of attractions and organised events.

So – get comfy with your diary, whether it’s paper or digital – or both….we have lots of ideas to fill those days throughout the #sussexbytheseasons.

From the 17 ^th – 26 ^th March we are marking English Tourism Week 2023 and celebrating all things tourism. There is so much on offer in and around Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton , to suit all tastes, budgets, interests and across the generations. Whether you’re into family fun, nature discovery, wellbeing retreats, water (and land based) sports, history & heritage, shopping, coastal or countryside walks, cycling and horse riding , or all the above. We’ve got it all!

Why not show your support for local attractions and visit those that are opening up or extending their hours for the 2023 summer season, such as Arundel Castle, Amberley Museum, Harbour Park, Littlehampton and day visits at Butlin’s Bognor Regis .

The district also has some glorious parks and open spaces, where you can walk, cycle, watch the local wildlife and breathe in the fresh air, and exercise all your senses. Oh, and the beaches are pretty good too!

Royal visits and Coronation celebrations in Sussex by the Sea

Union Flag bunting will adorn street parties and celebratory events to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on the 6 ^th May and over the Bank Holiday weekend of Saturday 6 to Monday 8 May 2023.

The Coronation Ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. His Majesty will be crowned alongside Her Majesty The Queen Consort and The Duke of Norfolk whose home is Arundel Castle will be overseeing the official proceedings in his role as Earl Marshal.

Discover the Coronation’s history, national plans for the weekend and how you can get involved too. With the short month of February now behind us, March is in full bloom with yellow daffodils and dainty snowdrops peppering our beautiful landscape here in the Arun District.

March marks the official start of spring following the Equinox on 20th March, and daylight-saving time begins at the end of the month too which means longer days and more time to enjoy the natural beauty and plethora of activities on offer in ‘Sussex by the Sea’ as we move into warmer months – can you tell we’re excited?!

Mothering Sunday 2023 is on the 19 ^th March too. Why not plan a day out at one of our lovely attractions, or afternoon tea, or dinner. Keep an eye on our social channels for lots of ideas to choose from, which we plan to share, direct from our wide range of attractions and hospitality businesses. Don’t forget #supportlocal !

Things To Do in February 2023

The days are getting longer, nature is waking up and the first half term school holiday of 2023 is beckoning, with several organised events planned.

Hopefully the weather will behave itself and give us all the chance to get out in the fresh air, enjoy the coast, countryside and parks, and visit those attractions that will be open too. So, make this the month to get out and discover something new for the new year!

Spring Half Term 2023 in West Sussex is from Monday 13 to Friday 17 February and some local attractions will have activities to coax you out and about. Within the Arun District take a look at the websites for Arundel Museum and WWT Arundel

It’s also snowdrop time! For local places to view these lovely signs of the coming spring, visit Denmans Garden or Highdown Gardens just northwest of Worthing. Why not go snowdrop hunting in the local parks and nature reserves ? If you received a nice new diary or notebook for Christmas, how about starting a local nature journal? You could explore the National Garden Scheme website and search for local gardens open near you too.

Enjoy Winter and early Spring in the Arun District, whatever the weather!

With some of the highest sunshine hours in the country, and protected from the elements by the South Downs National Park to the north and the Isle of Wight and Selsey Bill to the west, the Arun District is often fortunate weather wise. But if rain threatens to interrupt your plans this Winter and early Spring, here are some suggestions of things to do on a rainy day in 2023.

Arundel

WWT Arundel Wetland Centre  is open every day except Christmas Day and presents a great place to visit, relax and enjoy nature. If you’re going to get wet, this is the place to dress appropriately and enjoy the real thing! The attraction hosts great seasonal events and has bird watching hides on site plus a great café, attractive indoor viewing area and a specialist shop waiting for you to warm up, grab a hot drink and something tasty to eat, and dry out. A real all weather attraction for everyone!

Arundel Museum  is also open all year, with regular exhibitions, events, a gift shop and a full history of this fascinating Sussex market town to explore. There’s a Pay & Display car and coach park, right next door, hot drinks available in the museum and it’s a just 5 minute walk into town for a wide range of warm, dry and cosy eateries and independent shops.

Browse a great supply of new and older books on a huge range of subjects in the two traditional bookshops in town. Call in to Kim's Bookshop or The Book Ferret and treat yourself! There’s the local Library in Surrey Street to investigate too!

From children’s shows to top names in the entertainment world, take a look at the latest programme of escapism and entertainment for this month and beyond at The Regis Centre and Alexandra Theatre  -

The Picturedrome Cinema  is an historic venue offering live streamed shows and the latest cinematic releases, all year round, and its great value!

Pop! - Bognor Regis Bid  – an exhibitions and events space provided by Bognor Regis Bid, between the town centre and the seafront.

Bognor Regis Museum is closed until Spring 2023, but you can take a virtual tour of the museum while you plan your next visit in person. The Museum also hosts regular talks on local history throughout the year, take a look at their 2023 diary and get in touch.

Heygates Bookshop is a great place to browse and stock up on a magnificent range of cold and warm weather reading. Located next to the railway station, pop in for a ‘Brief Encounter’ with your favourite books soon. Bognor Regis Library is not far away in London Road too.

If you’re happy to brave the weather with umbrella, wellies, and appropriate clothing, Hotham Park offers ‘Wildforest Falls’ Adventure Golf  and more lovely walks through the park and Hotham Park Cafe to warm up in with great food and drink

If you’re going to get wet anyway, the Arun Leisure Centre has a great pool and many other activities on offer too.

Littlehampton Museum  for history, activities and exhibitions and  The Windmill Entertainment Centre  provide live shows and cinema all year long.

The Beach Café and Activities , Littlehampton Wave , The Edge Cafe @ Edgcumbes , Mewsbrook Park Café , Harbour Lights Riverside Café and Soft Play are great locations not far from the sea and river to meet up with friends in the warmth and enjoy a hot drink and bite to eat.

Enjoying the natural world

The RSPB and Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust look after some wonderful coastal and riverside centres in the district where you can witness wildlife in all its forms, with expertise and guidance on hand to add to the experience. There’s RSPB Pagham Harbour west of Bognor Regis, RSPB Pulborough Brooks north of Arundel and WWT Arundel located alongside the River Arun and the Castle where, along with newts and dragonflies, you’ll be able to meet pelicans and even, if you’re lucky, White Tailed Eagles who have recently been spotted locally! The district’s award winning quality parks, reserves and of course the beaches are all great places to breathe the fresh air and witness nature in all its forms.

Running parallel with our coastline we have the wonderful South Downs National Park on our doorstep – with a 100 mile National Trail between Winchester and Eastbourne and miles of wonderful, varied habitat to enjoy. Arundel is one of the gateways to the National Park with some great walks (and views) starting from Swanbourne Lake, just across the road from WWT Arundel and from Whiteways Lodge at the top of Bury Hill, north of the town.

Discovering history and local culture

Arundel Castle of course is our local ‘jewel in the crown’, the home of many events and historic and artistic treasures, as well as stunning gardens!

Arundel also has a beautiful Roman Catholic Cathedral which hosts the unique (in the UK) Corpus Christi Carpet of Flowers each year, 60 days after Easter. Another unique historic experience can be found across the road from the Cathedral in the form of historic St Nicholas’ Church which is both Catholic and Anglican!

There are fabulous local museums in Arundel, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Rustington and tour guides can be booked to help you make the most of your historic interests. And don’t forget the History and Heritage Trails in all three local towns.

Nearby Chichester is a Saxon, Roman & Georgian city with Normal Cathedral and great Museum built around the Roman Baths! Modern Art is in abundance in the city and the world famous Chichester Festival Theatreoffers top class theatre and culture.

Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton all celebrate local culture and talent, with arts, festivals, exhibitions and theatre offering entertainment all year round. From Arundel Arts Festival and Arundel at Christmas to Skateboarding competitions, Watersports and Wassail events, and ‘Pagham Pram Race’ too!

Escaping, relaxing and enjoying new surroundings

If you travel to the district from London by train, relaxation tinged with excitement can be experienced as soon as you see the Sussex countryside and Arundel with the castle, church and cathedral on the skyline. Stone Sculptures and Rock Pooling

Sandy beaches are all very well, but shingle beaches can be fun too. Search online for images of stone sculpture for inspiration and take a look at what you’re likely to find at low tide in rockpools . Join the local running community , in Hotham Park, Bognor Regis every Saturday (adults) and every Sunday for (children) or choose Littlehampton Parkrun on the Prom each Saturday.

Wrap up warm, keep active and pick from some of our favourite ‘Sussex by the Sea’ picnic spots, there are so many to choose from!

Plan your adventures and check the Arun District Beaches, Leisure Facilities and Play Parks and Skate Parks, Parks and Nature Reserves , plus Swanbourne Lake, Arundel , Slindon (National Trust) and Eartham Woods .

Whether you are a local resident or a visitor from neighbouring districts, there is much more to see and do in Sussex by the Sea than many of us perhaps realise. Why not take some time to explore all that’s close by and leave the car at home?

Arundel

Most people know Arundel for it’s famous castle and historic heritage but did you also know that it is also home to the Arundel Lido? The pool with the best view in the county opens for alfresco swimming from early April until the middle of September. There is also a monthly farmers’ market on the 3 ^rd Saturday of every month from 9am-1pm for great local produce and events and exhibitions to enjoy throughout the year. Bognor Regis

Bognor Regis is home to activities and attractions, a long Royal history , nationally renowned beaches and delicious fish and chips! You’ll also find a great choice of independent cafes and restaurants, sporting activities, some great Heritage Trails , a thriving theatre, historic cinema and pubs and clubs to enjoy in the evenings too. Littlehampton

Littlehampton has evolved from a small fishing community to an established beach resort location. However, the riverside town has much more to offer than stunning sand and shingle beaches!
